Horse Shoe Curve/Sand Patch Grade Combo

Horse Shoe Curve/Sand Patch Grade Combo

£18.00

Horse Shoe Curve and Sand Patch Grade are two Pennsylvania railroading landmarks of enormous popularity, with good reason. They share long history, challenging terrain, heavy traffic, and innovative technologies. Pentrex recorded these famous sites in the late 1980s and released two outstanding shows, both of which are included on this new combo DVD.

Horse Shoe Curve

Step back to 1989 when Conrail was running from 40-60 trains a day through the 3-track curve at this historic site in central Pennsylvania. Most of the action here is led by Conrail but Amtrak makes an appearance as well. The interesting mix of motive power you'll see here includes SD40s, SD40-2s, SD45-2s, and GE C30-7As. You'll travel to Alto Tower in Altoona, Benny, the Gallitzin Twin Tunnels, AR Tower, MO Tower in Cresson, but most of all you'll spend quality time at Horse Shoe Curve itself, the granddaddy of railfan locations! (75 minutes)

Sand Patch Grade

Old and new technologies intermingle on this remote yet important route through the Alleghenies. In 1990, when our show was recorded, this former B&O trackage was known as the Mainline Subdivision, a part of CSX's Chicago-to-Baltimore mainline. CSX trains battled their way upgrade through Brackens, Fairhope, Falls Cut Tunnel, Glencoe, the horse shoe curve at Mance, and Sand Patch Grade itself. You'll see a variety of motive power including GP30s, GP40s, SD50s, the CSX F-unit, and others in an assortment of paint schemes such as B&O, C&O, Clinchfield, Seaboard, Chessie, and classic CSX colors. You'll also tour the tower at Hyndman where vintage Armstrong levers were still in daily use and visit busy SA tower at the crest of Sand Patch Summit. Sand Patch Grade, rich in history, abounds in exciting mainline railroading! (60 minutes)

Amtrak's Northeast Corridor Combo

Amtrak's Northeast Corridor Combo

£18.00

The Northeast Corridor was a modern commuter raceway when Pentrex set out to capture this busy line in 1992. So much great footage was filmed with Amtrak's cooperation that two videos were released giving viewers an exclusive, insider's look at Amtrak's pride and joy. Now both shows have been combined on one Combo DVD, bringing you the whole Northeast Corridor story. Included are:

New York City to Philadelphia

Focusing on this electrified heavily-trafficked portion of the line, our program brings you a fascinating mix of old and new technologies. Trains roar down the electrified mainline at speeds of up to 125 mph, governed by Automatic Block Signals and dispatched from Philadelphia. Yet manned block towers dating back to the turn of the century can still be found in use on the line. Experience over 150 Amtrak and commuter trains in action as you visit Penn Station, Hudson Tower, Newark, Trenton, Princeton Junction, and Zoo Interlocking and the venerable "A" and Zoo towers on your trek from New York City to Philadelphia. (80 minutes)

Philadelphia to Washington, D.C.

Exploring the electrified south end of the system, our cameras capture over 100 commuter and Amtrak trains between Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. You'll see the action at Eddystone, Pennsylvania; Wilmington, Delaware; Perryville, Havre de Grace, Aberdeen, and Baltimore, Maryland; and the D.C. area. You'll also go on a private tour of the CETC control center in Amtrak's 30th Street station and visit Washington Union Station's "K" tower. A special highlight is a ride in the cab of an AEM7 locomotive at the head of a Metroliner train doing 125 mph! (80 minutes)

Steam Over Tennessee Pass

Steam Over Tennessee Pass

£18.00

A once-in-a-lifetime steam excursion took place in June 1997 and Pentrex was on the spot with five camera teams to record the entire event. Union Pacific’s mighty 844, leading an A-B-A set of E-units and 18 matched passenger cars, made one last extraordinary trip through the Royal Gorge and over Tennessee Pass prior to UP’s closing of this historic line. Now you can relive the excitement of this thrilling steam adventure!

On Day One, you’ll follow the beautiful train as it heads south out of Denver on the Joint Line and into Canon City. Day Two brings you the sights and sounds of steam marching through the depths of the Royal Gorge, across the hanging bridge, up along the banks of the winding Arkansas River, blasting up grade to conquer 10,000-foot high Tennessee Pass, and heading down through Glenwood Canyon, a spectacular achievement! Day three features a high-speed chase across Utah’s magnificent desert landscapes, running past Green River and into Helper. In an awesome display of power, the 844 battles steep grades of Castle Gate and Soldier Summit. The final hours of the day see the train heading down through the Thistle tunnels and Provo, and arriving at Salt Lake City. Mainline steam just doesn’t get any better than this!

Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Passenger Trains

Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Passenger Trains

£18.00

Ride on the longest and highest narrow gauge railroad in North America, the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad. This remnant of the once flourishing Rio Grande narrow gauge network runs from Chama, New Mexico to Antonito, Colorado. The spectacular vistas of the San Juan Mountains and the Upper Rio Chama Valley flank the rails of this serpentine route as it switches back and forth across the two state lines.

Mikado steam locomotives built in the mid 1920s power the vintage equipment for these passenger trains. Daily, during summer months, they struggle up the four percent grade to the 10,015-foot summit of Cumbres Pass. You’ll ride in the cab and witness the expertise of the engineer and fireman who control these locomotives as they blast upgrade. Numerous run-bys highlight the power and beauty of a C&TS doubleheader at many scenic spots along the 64-mile line.

This program, released originally in 1991 and now available on DVD, brings you narrow gauge railroading at its finest on one of America’s most popular tourist railroads. Enjoy the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Passenger Train!

Union Pacific 6900s - The Centennials

Union Pacific 6900s - The Centennials

£18.00

Experience the largest, most powerful diesel locomotives ever built. The Union Pacific DDA40X Centennials weighed in at 270 tons, were close to 100 feet long (98 feet 5 inches), carried an 8,000-gallon fuel tank, had 16-cylinder dual power plants that could generate 6,600 horsepower, and attained speeds of up to 90 mph. 47 of these behemoths were built for the Union Pacific by the Electro-Motive Division of GMC between 1969 and 1971. Within 5 years of service, most of these units had racked up over 1,000,000 miles of duty, predominantly on UP’s high-speed western states mainline freights. Powerful as they were, the “Big Jacks” were also high maintenance locomotives and by the early 1980s were being phased out of duty.

In this award-winning video, originally released by Video Rails, you’ll witness the Centennials traveling through all types of terrain across 5 different states. Thrilling scenes feature them in operation on Sherman Hill, in the Feather River Canyon, and even over Cajon Pass. Fantastic pacing sequences add to the excitement. Plus, a special treat is a cab ride in a Centennial racing along at 90 mph! There was nothing quite like the sights and sounds of UP Centennials on the rails. Here is your chance to see them at their very finest!

Big Boy Combo Part 2

Big Boy Combo Part 2

£22.00

Weighing in at one and a quarter million pounds, measuring 132 feet long, Union Pacific Big Boys were the giants of the rails. Just 25 Big Boys were built and they only remained in service for 18 years before the end of the steam era. Yet their power and performance make them as popular today as in their own day. This Combo DVD brings you two viewing treats: a Pentrex documentary focusing on Big Boy operations over Sherman Hill and a 1950s television drama about a Big Boy engineer.

Last of the Giants Volume 3: Sherman Hill (70 Minutes)

Allan Krieg, writer and director of Last of the Giants, shares the challenges his camera crews faced while capturing the Big Boys on film. Scenes of the running gear in motion, shot from a camera car on a parallel track, and pacing sequences of the Big Boys on the road are thrilling to see. You'll ride in the cabs and watch the firemen and engineers at work. Interviews with surviving crewmembers give you a sense of what it was like to run these giant engines over Sherman Hill. All the scenes shown in this production are compiled from 16mm color film shot between 1955 and 1958.

Big Boys on TV (70 Minutes, Black & White)

Ed Begley stars in this 1950s NBC Lucky Strike Theater drama about a Big Boy engineer who is struggling with fears about his future. The live broadcast takes you right into the heart of this railroader's life at home and in the cab of his Big Boy. Pentrex incorporated some of the original footage shot on location showing Big Boys on Sherman Hill and in the Cheyenne yards. (It's all new material, not used in other Pentrex videos.) We also included the old commercials that aired with the broadcast. They will make you smile. This is a program the whole family can enjoy. * Chapter Menu provides instant access to program segments.

BURLINGTON ROUTE STEAM

BURLINGTON ROUTE STEAM

Ref: BURLINGTON

Price: £15.00

Through the 16mm films of Everett Rohrer and Perry Becker we can enjoy Burlington Route Steam from the upper Midwest to the states of Nebraska, Colorado and Wyoming. Regular service operations include Burlington's ancient 4-6-0 number 919 on mixed train service from Cheyenne to Sterling, CO in 1956, and several Colorado and Southern steamers in Colorado in switching service. Colorado excursions are covered with C&S 2-8-0 #647, as well as 2-10-2 number 902 which later has the Great Western 2-10-0 #90 take over the train at Longmont. Several trips with 2-8-0 #638 are shown including its last run in December 1962. The big steam stars on The CB&Q(Burlington), are 4-6-4 Hudson number 3003, 4-8-4 #5632, and 2-8-2 #4960. There are many trips with 5632 and 4960, which were the last steamers in service on the Burlington. Action with 5632 is mainly out of Minneapolis into Wisconsin, but there is one trip in Colorado. 4960 is seen in Colorado, Nebraska, and on the circus train in Wisconsin a couple of weeks before 4960's final run in 1966. All this is steam-era action with Colorado & Southern, and CB&Q under the umbrella of Burlington Route Steam. Historical action footage of a bygone era of steam railroading in the United States. 72 minutes

NORTHERN PACIFIC - FAREWELL TO STEAM

NORTHERN PACIFIC - FAREWELL TO STEAM

Ref: NP FAREWELL

Price: £15.00

In the early 1950's steam locomotives were being replaced rapidly by diesels on most railroads and Northern Pacific was no exception. Fortunately photographers like Mr. Maynard Laing, of Bellevue, Washington chronicled many of the final days of steam in his area including the famous Casey Jones excursions with some of the last NP steamers in the Seattle area.

Northern Pacific 4-6-0 #1372 is one of the stars of the program as it operates on the an excursion from Seattle in December 1956, followed by two more excursions in 1957 including the line to North Bend, Washington. This scenic line, with many high wooden trestles and light rail, was suited for 1372 which operated in this area in freight service (a scene from the video is our cover painting at Woodinville Tank in freight service by Patrick Haskett).

Photographer Laing's longtime friend Elwin Purington has supplied us with authentic NP sounds to use with the original 16mm film and the real sounds of NP engines makes this a historically significant video. In one scene 1372 passes the famous Snoqualmie falls and you feel like you are right there.

Besides the 1372 there is some earlier footage around Seattle which includes the famous Timken engine 4-8-4 #2626 at the Seattle engine facility, and engine 1911 on the Turntable and on a train headed for Tacoma. Additional scenes show a 4-6-6-4 on the turntable at Spokane, and a few other odds and ends. All the engines in this video have since been scrapped, as 1372 was scrapped shortly after the last trip shown on this video. Don't forget to check out other tapes we have produced from the Laing collection including the Rayonier tape, and the DM&IR video. There are a few more to come! 30 minutes

FIRST TRAIN TO TOLTEC

FIRST TRAIN TO TOLTEC

Ref: TOLTEC

Price: £15.00

This video takes you behind the scenes as the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad opens a blockaded railroad, and then we charter a special freight train just for YOU! Our presentation takes up where the Rotary train left off. We were invited along on a special work train dispatched to clear a boulder that sits squarely on the tracks. A crew has blasted the rock with dynamite then the work train with its loader is used to clear the rubble off the tracks so repairs can be made. This is very unusual, and in remote Colorado high country.

Next we charter a special, authentically lettered "Rio Grande" freight train, just for YOU! We start out of Chama, New Mexico with K-37 2-8-2 #497 in the lead with good size freight train headed for the summit of Cumbres Pass. Engine 484 is a rear helper coupled in just ahead of the caboose, as they tackle the 4% grade which includes a stop for both engines to water at the Cresco tank. As elevation increases to about 9500 feet, the snow deepens from where the Rotary had cleared a few days earlier, and the freight crests 10,015 foot Cumbres Pass in a 6 foot trench of snow. Later our train encounters a huge drift of snow near Osier, and our helper engine, now running ahead of the train, plows the snow several times, and derails. After re-railing we head east to videotape a snow-covered locomotive at several locations, including the Toltec Tunnel. We are the first train of the 1997 season to reach this location, a remote spot in the Rockies on the narrow gauge with a steam-hauled freight train. A great companion to our Rocky Mountain Snowplow video. 60 mins

NORFOLK SOUTHERN STEAM VOLUME 2

NORFOLK SOUTHERN STEAM VOLUME 2

Ref: NSSTEAM2

Price: £15.00

This second volume is more of a variety tape in that it covers lines and engines other than just former Norfolk and Western livery. One of the highlights of the video is the four day Independence Limited from Bellevue to Roanoke with Nickel Plate Road 2-8-2 double-heading with N&W 611. Engine 587 led the first day to Muncie on former Nickel Plate trackage, and 611 led the way the following days with overnight stops in Cincinnati, and Bluefield before climbing Christiansburg grades west slope and arriving in Roanoke where we see 1218 at Shafer's Crossing Roundhouse in the foreground as the doubleheader goes by. Then a few weeks later 587, 611 and 1218 triplehead to Lynchburg as part of a one-way move to position the engines for further trips. This is a rare sight indeed, especially at Blue Ridge, VA. Next we see a trip from Lexington, KY with Louisville and Nashville 4-6-2 #152 (leased by NS) on a trip to Stearns, Ky. This unusual trip had engine 611 for the return trip to Lexington in the afternoon. You'll also see N&W 611 on selected shots on the Cincinnati to Lexington, Kentucky section, and interesting set of comparison shots showing 1218 and 611 at the exact same locations on the Cincinnati to Portsmouth (Peavine line) route on different trips. There is a ton of unique material here and a very exciting show of never to repeated performances. 60 minutes

OHIO RAIL DIAMONDS

OHIO RAIL DIAMONDS

Ref: OHIODIAMONDS

Price: £15.00

Our day of shooting Ohio Rail Diamonds begins in Fostoria, where we see CSX trains primarily, including ones from Toledo connecting to the east-west mainline, and trains on that line going both directions. Then we move east to a rural diamond at Attica Junction where the same CSX mainline toward Pittsburgh and Cleveland crosses the Norfolk Southern's line that goes between Columbus and Belleview. Then we return to Fostoria to see some action at the western Diamond where NS crosses CSX at the old B&O depot. The former Baltimore and Ohio Line crosses the former Nickel Plate here. Then we head west to Deshler Ohio where the east-west line toward Chicago crosses the Toledo Subdivision that runs from Cincinnati to Toledo. Trains also connect to the east-west line here as many trains head east from Cincinnati or south from the east. Our next stop is at Leipsic Junction located south of Deshler. This is the crossing of the former B&O Toledo-Cincinnati line, with the former Nickel Plate(now NS) line between Fostoria and Ft. Wayne. An abandoned Tower guards the diamond. We see a nice variety of motive power and trains for this day long shoot which takes us back to Deshler to end the day, as we see a transcontinental container train that is two miles long cross the diamond as another train diverges along side it.

We have added two more related segments to this day-long diamond shoot. First we include footage from 2005 when we spent a morning in Deshler. This has some glorious morning lighting, as we see 12 trains in a span of 3 hours. We did not spend a lot of time in Deshler in our 2006 day of diamond shooting, so this 2005 segment is a nice addition. It is not narrated, but has live audio. Then we wrap up the program with a Flash-back to 1991 and a few trains that we saw at Leipsic Tower and in Lima. We see some now retired 4-axel power, and a couple of surprises.

The main portion of this program is shot in wide-screen format, but the 2005 Deshler segment, and the 1991 Leipsic segments are in standard 4:3 of course. There is a lot to see in Ohio Rail Diamonds. 82 minutes

VIRGINIA RAILS

VIRGINIA RAILS

Ref: VIRGINIA

Price: £15.00

Enjoy contemporary action with CSX and Amtrak trains at the hot spot locations of Ashland, and Doswell, Virginia. Located on the busy former Richmond, Fredericksburg, and Potomac north-south mainline, you will see a great variety of railroad action.

What makes Ashland so special? The doubletrack mainline runs right through the center of town, with streets on both sides of the line. There are quaint buildings and a small college not to mention the Ashland depot which still serves as an Amtrak stop. Ashland is about 15 miles north of Richmond, and Florida Trains, as well as trains to Richmond and Newport News pass through and make stops in Ashland.

We were going to make the entire tape a hotspot tape on Ashland(Featured in Kalmbachs Hotspot book), but decided to go one step further and include Doswell along with Ashland. Doswell is about 6-8 miles north of Ashland, and there is an old depot(now a CSX crew building), and a diamond where the old Chesapeake and Ohio Line crosses the former RF&P. An abandoned tower guards the crossing. There is also a small CSX yard, and a couple of trains originate here, plus there some trains connect to the other line. The action has its peaks and valleys, with trains running in spurts, but generally you see about 25-30 trains during daylight hours. More than 2 days are covered in the video.

During some of the background information you will even see some vintage video with old Amtrak trains(F40's), freights with RF&P unit, and a Juice Train. This makes up perhaps 2 minutes of the video. Also we have a cool music video at the end, which is a bonus(not figured in the 70 Minutes).

In addition to regular freight and passenger trains, we will see special trains, like the Tropicana Juice Train, the Rock Train, the trash train, and Amtrak's Autotrain. This is contemporary Railroading at its best, in an area that is seldom seen on rail videos. Approx. 70 Minutes

4501 25th ANNIVERSARY

4501 25th ANNIVERSARY

Ref: 4501

Price: £15.00

Former Southern Railway 2-8-2 number 4501 is the star of this program as we begin with historic film footage of 4501 as engine 12 on the Kentucky and Tennessee Railroad in the early 1960s. Then we see 4501 in early Southern Steam Excursion service along with a few other Southern engines. The majority of the program was shot in 1991 and includes a short freight run from Salisbury, North Carolina to Asheville including scenes at the Loops on the Old Fort line. Then we follow the train to Knoxville, which includes a cab ride from Newport, Tennessee to Knoxville. Other trips include some coverage of the return trip of an excursion from Oneida to Chattanooga and some scenes of a southbound portion of a Cincinnati to Lexington run. The 25th Anniversary part of the title stems from the 25th Anniversary of the Southern and Norfolk Southern Steam Excursion program which took place in Chattanooga in October / November, 1991. We enjoy a 4501 trip west from Chattanooga, then the capper is the tripleheader as 4501 leads 611 and 1218 on a run. Later they all split and we get a few more shots of 4501 on a passenger train. This was interesting as about 3 years later the NS steam program was disbanded, and this was one of the last runs of 1218 since it went in the shop that winter, and never ran again. 4501 is privately owned and may operate again in the future. This tape has something for all steam fans to enjoy. 60 minutes
